In celebration of Women in Construction Week, we’re proud to spotlight Emily, one of EBCO’s newest Project Engineers. A recent graduate of Texas A&M with a degree in Construction Science, Emily brings determination, curiosity, and strong values to the start of her career in commercial construction.

We sat down with her to learn more about her path, her first impressions of the industry, and what advice she has for young women considering construction.

Career Path & Early Interest

What first sparked your interest in construction?

“What first sparked my interest in construction was my interest in building and design. I like being able to work toward something and then step back and see what was created. It’s rewarding to know that what you built will be used and appreciated by others. I’m also a goal-oriented person, and construction fits that well because every project has clear goals, progress you can see, and a strong sense of accomplishment when it’s finished.”

What drew you to start your career at EBCO after graduating?

“I come from a small town, so values like hard work, respect, trust, and community are very important to me. EBCO stood out because they stay true to those small-town values while also building large, high-quality projects. They have the capabilities of a big construction company but still maintain a close-knit culture. I also appreciated that EBCO was willing to invest in me and help me grow to where I want to be in my career. Everyone was very kind and welcoming during the recruiting and interview process, which made me feel like part of the team right away and confirmed it was the right place for me to start my career.”

Early Career & Learning

What has surprised you most about working in construction since graduating?

“What has surprised me most about working in construction since graduating is how much coordination and teamwork it takes to keep a project moving. There are so many people involved, and everyone has to communicate and work together toward the same goal. I was also surprised by how fast things move and how much you learn on the job. Every day has new challenges, which has definitely helped me learn quickly.”

What has been the biggest learning curve for you as a Project Engineer so far?

“The biggest learning curve for me as a Project Engineer has been learning how many moving parts there are on a project and how everything connects. It took time to understand the process and how to stay organized while keeping everything moving.”

Women in Construction

Have you had any mentors or role models who influenced your career path?

“I didn’t have any family members in construction, so I chose to study Construction Science because of my interest in building and the idea of working toward something you can see come to life. My parents were very supportive and encouraged me to pursue what I was interested in and where I felt I would do well. In college, my professors were very encouraging and helped me feel confident in my decision to pursue construction. They played a big role in confirming that this was the right career for me.”

What advice would you give to young women considering construction?

“My advice would be to go for it and not be intimidated. Construction is a great career with a lot of opportunities to learn and grow. Bringing a new perspective is valuable, and different experiences and ways of thinking help make projects and teams stronger. Work hard, don’t get discouraged, and take every opportunity to learn. Construction is an industry where you are always learning, and no matter how much experience you gain, there is always more to learn and improve on.”

Life on the Job at EBCO

What’s a memorable experience you’ve had working at EBCO?

“One memorable experience I’ve had at EBCO was traveling to Tucson in January for the Tempo Tucson project. I had been working on it from afar since I started, so it was really cool to finally see it in person and see how everything was coming together. I also haven’t traveled much before, and it was my first big work trip, which made it even more memorable. I even got to climb the tower crane while I was there, which was a really cool experience.”

One word to describe working at EBCO?

“Supportive. Everyone at EBCO is willing to help and take the time to teach and answer questions. As someone early in my career, that support has helped me learn, grow, and feel more confident in the work I’m doing. Everyone is also very kind to each other, and there is a genuine effort to make sure people are in the right place and set up for success.”
